Police claimed Pal worked in a private automobile firm. For the past few months, he was in a relationship with a 20-year-old. The girl is from Baranagar and has been living at a relative’s place close to her college in Bediapara. According to the FIR, the girl was “very close” to Pal, frequenting his home and borrowing money from him. The FIR claimed Pal was pushed to the edge when he had to financially help the girl to keep the relationship going.
Pal’s family claimed that for the past few weeks, the girl had ceased contact with Pal. She didn’t respond to his calls and rebuffed his attempts to meet her. “He was on the verge of a breakdown. Last night, he called her again and she answered. The girl reportedly told him that she was now married and living with her husband,” said Pal’s aunt Julie Dey. “He broke down. We tried to console him but he wouldn’t listen and retired to his room. This morning, when he didn’t come out, we got suspicious. We broke in and saw his body hanging from the ceiling fan tied with a blanket,” she added.
Pal was declared dead on arrival at Dum Dum municipal hospital. As the news spread, Pal’s friends and acquaintances went to the girl’s home demanding an explanation. But she refused to step out and cops intervened to keep the mob in check. Pal’s family then lodged an FIR.
Police called the girl for questioning, where she admitted to having had a relationship with Pal and said they had spoken the night before. Cops seized the phone and arrested her. Barrackpore police commissioner Subrata Mitra said, “She has been arrested for abetting suicide. The case is being probed.”
