Class 6 student drowns in pool at school summer camp in Asansol
Asansol: A class 6 student allegedly drowned in the swimming pool of a private English medium school in Asansol during a summer camp session on Thursday morning. Aadvik Hilarian, 11, was among 30 students participating in a swimming session of the summer camp at St. Vincent's School under the supervision of two trainers, school authorities said. One of the trainers saw Hilarian in distress and immediately pulled him out of the pool, the school's principal, Ravi Victor, said. The student was administered CPR after which he opened his eyes and then threw up, the principal added. School authorities rushed Hilarian to Asansol District Hospital where doctors declared him dead. His parents were subsequently informed. Police have sent the body for post mortem. DCP (central) Dhruba Das told TOI: "The student's family has not lodged a complaint. We have initiated an inquiry to ascertain whether there was negligence."The pool in which the incident took place is 25 metres long and 10 metres wide. The shallow end of the pool is 3.5ft deep while the deep end is 12ft deep, a source said. The incident has raised questions about the absence of CCTVs near the pool area. School authorities said CCTVs were not installed in the area because students use the adjacent space to change out of their clothes.
