Clashes rock Malda; BJP candidate held in Cooch Behar

Kolkata:Malda’s Englishbazar and Cooch Behar remained tense on Thursday. While eight houses were ransacked in a clash between the Trinamool and the opposition at Nagharia in Englishbazar, police arrested a BJP zilla parishad candidate in connection to a 2018 case at Cooch Behar’s Sitalkuchi.
A Dinhata court remanded the accused in judicial custody for two weeks.
Trouble broke out at Englishbazar late on Wednesday when TMC men clashed with those who had filed nominations on Congress tickets or as Independents after being denied Trinamool tickets. Three persons were arrested.
On Thursday, Nandigram police station officer-in-charge Suman Roy Chowdhury went on leave, sparking speculation in political circles. Kashinath Chowdhury took charge as the new OC.
