'Citizens’ active role and positive action can help improve Kolkata'
"Citizens should come forward to make Calcutta a better city," said Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Trinamool MP while addressing a discussion on "Role of Citizens in making Calcutta a better city" organized by Concern for Calcutta, an NGO.
Narayan Jain, president of Concern for Kolkata said "Citizens’ active role and positive action can help to improve Kolkata for better traffic rules and for reducing pollution, he wanted the citizens to be pro-active for the sake of better environment of Kolkata.

He also urged citizens of Kolkata to keep roads, parks clean and not to spit in public places.
Debashis Kumar, member, Mayor-in-Council, Kolkata Municipal Corporation informed that the parks under KMC have been beautified and facilities for children have been provided. Solar Power System has been put in all KMC buildings. He expressed concern on use of plastic carry bags. On Kumar's suggestion, Concern for Calcutta announced to launch a campaign to encourage use of jute bags and discard plastic bags.
Dr. SK Sharma highlighted how pollution causes respiratory problems, so keeping a clean environment should be a priority for all.
Jag Mohan, DG, Fire Brigade and Emergency Services said that they are increasing measures for safety and security of citizens.
Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta emphasized the need to regulate traffic and protect trees and greenery. "Anybody cutting trees should first take permission of authority and plant 10 trees against each plant chopped off", said Justice Sengupta.
