KOLKATA: A Border Security Force personnel was sentenced to life imprisonment in a dowry death case at the Barasat court on Thursday. According to public prosecutor Pritish Dasgupta, Subir Mandal had married Suparna five years ago. At the time of wedding, he had taken Rs 30,000 besides other articles as dowry. There was an “agreement that he would be given Rs 20,000 more and a gold chain afterwards. As the fa-ther of the bride could not meet the “commitment, his daughter had to suffer. Mandal was posted with the BSF in Kashmir. Whenever he came home, he tortured his wife mentally and physically, demanding the “rest the dowry. On the evening of April 2002, Suparna was beaten severely. Neighbours heard her cries. The next night, which was a stormy one, neighbours saw Mandal coming out of his house in pair of shorts. He told them that his wife had committed suicide. The post-mortem report, how-ever, revealed that she had been strangulated. Subir was arrested on the basis of an FIR lodged by Suparna’s father Anil Mandal. During the day, 5th additional sessions judge Hari Prasad Chatterjee convicted Subir under sections 498A and 302 of the IPC. Dasgupta, assisted by Sunita Chatterjee and Arun Roy, appeared for the state, while Bidyut Bose appeared for the accused.
