Kolkata: Boy with rare disorder makes city proud

KOLKATA: City boy Sahil Akhtar who suffers from locomotive disorder has ranked first in the “person with disabilities” category of Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), a national programme of fellowship in basic sciences funded by the Centre’s department of science and technology to encourage students to take up research careers in area of basic science.





Sahil, a Class XII student of DPS-Ruby Park, has secured an all-India rank of 39 in the general category. “I want to study astrophysics and IISc is a good option. I am also representing India at the Olympiad in Georgia,” he said. Sahil was two-and-a-half months old when he was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome. He was recovering when he got a second attack aged six and was on ventilator for 23 days. Though the odds were tremendous, the family didn't give up. Nor did Sahil.
