So far no one seems to have done better than Swarnajit Chatterjee's 91.8%.
BISHNUPUR/ALIPURDUAR/ARAMBAG: Swarnajit Chatterjee was too poor to study. His father is jobless and mother an Anganwadi worker. Had his school - Bankura Sonamukhi Bora Chhatra School - not 'adopted' him, he would not even have been able to take his Higher Secondary exams, let alone possibly top it. Like Md Arif Shiekh, the poor fatherless North Dinajpur boy who was given bed, boarding and schooling by Al-Amin Mission and who topped Madhyamik two days back, Swarnajit, too, braved extreme odds to reach the top.
However, it is not officially known if he is the topper as the HS council has stopped giving ranks. But so far no one seems to have done better than Swarnajit's 91.8%. There was a point when Swarnajit thought he would drop out of school. His mother earns barely Rs 1,200 a month. But his teachers wouldn't let him go. After all, he had always stood first in class.
For Swarnajit, it was sheer hard work, 12 hours a day towards the end. Not for him the cushion of private tutors or coaching class. He had joined the school in Class V, and since it has a hostel, he was provided free boarding there. Is he happy? Certainly, but he feels he could have done better. "At least 100 in maths." He got 96. His total is 459. He has cracked JEE, ranking 2,170, and hopes for a government engineering college seat.
This time, too, the districts did better than city schools, with at least 16 making it to the probable list of top 20, with the top three from the districts. Arpita Saha of Rahara Bhabanath School came second. At number three is Mrinmoy Das of Alipurduar Railway Junction School. Hooghly had its day in the sun with at least four students making it to the top 20. Arghya Mukherjee of Arambag High School scored 450 and is probably the fifth rank-holder. He has scored 474 in WBJEE and will study electronics or computer science at JU or Bengal Engineering and Science University. Only six students from the city made it to the probable top 20 list. Probable city topper Tamaghna Biswas of Nava Nalanda has ranked fourth in the state with a score of 452.
