Birbhum election results 2024 live updates: TMC's Satabdi Roy wins
NEW DELHI: TMC's Satabdi Roy won Birbhum Lok Sabha constituency by a margin of 197650 votes.
The Birbhum Lok Sabha constituency, which went to polls on April 26 during the fourth phase of the general elections in 2024, is located in the state of West Bengal. The constituency includes the following assembly segments: Dubrajpur, Suri, Bolpur, Nanoor, Labhpur, Mayureswar, Rampurhat, Hansan, Nalhati, and Murarai. Birbhum's literacy rate is an impressive 61.6%.

The BJP initially fielded former IPS officer Debashish Dhar from the Birbhum seat, but his nomination was unexpectedly cancelled due to the non-submission of a 'no dues' certificate, which certifies that a government employee has no outstanding debts to the state. Within a day, the BJP announced Debtanu Bhattacharya, a former pracharak and cluster in-charge of the Rarh region, as their new candidate for the seat.

In the 2019 parliamentary elections, AITC candidate Satabdi Roy secured victory with 6,54,077 votes (45.11%), while BJP's Dudh Kumar Mondal garnered 5,65,153 votes (34.97%). This reflected a significant political contest, marking the fierce competition in the region. The voter turnout of 85.3% was recorded in the last elections.

In the 2014 elections, Satabdi Roy also emerged victorious, underscoring her stronghold in Birbhum.
Birbhum remains a critical constituency in West Bengal's political scenario. For the 2024 elections, key candidates include Satabdi Roy from AITC, aiming for a successive term, and Debtanu Bhattacharya from BJP, who is looking to consolidate the party's presence in the region.
Historically, Birbhum has been a battleground for the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with significant influence also wielded by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM).
The demographic composition of Birbhum is reflective of West Bengal's diverse communities. Hindu voters form the majority at around 65%, while Muslims constitute a significant 33% of the electorate. Christians and other minorities make up the remaining 2%. Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) also play a crucial role in the electoral dynamics, with SC voters representing about 30% and ST voters about 6%.
