Bike-taxi passenger severely injured after bus hits two-wheeler on Dhakuria Bridge

Kolkata: A 27-year-old woman was severely injured and admitted to the ITU of a private hospital at Dhakuria after the bike taxi she was travelling on was hit by a bus on the Dhakuria Bridge. The woman was returning to her Ganguly Bagan home from work on Thursday when the accident took place. The victim, Sweta Sen, might need to undergo multiple surgeries, doctors stated, adding that the lower portion of her body was severely damaged.This is the second accident in as many weeks when a bike-taxi rider was injured. According to police, Thursday's incident was reported around 7.55 pm on the northern slope of Dhakuria flyover, close to the Panchanantala cut and around 300 m from Golpark. "The biker started to climb the bridge when a vehicle, believed to be a bus, hit it from behind. The app biker sustained minor injuries. We are checking CCTV footage and trying to find the vehicle involved in the accident and arrest the driver," said an officer.According to Sen's neighbours, she lives with her elder sister and father. The Fatal Squad officers of the traffic police indicated they plan to contact all major app-based bike facilitators, like Rapido, Ola, and Uber, and request them to start an awareness drive to ensure that passengers sit in the right posture and don't carry too many heavy items that can become unmanageable during the ride."Unlike a four-wheeler, riding a two-wheeler is all about balance. You need to position your body weight in such a way that your centre of mass aligns with that of the bike's. Sudden movements can disturb this alignment and cause an accident. Exactly the same goes for your pillion rider as well," an FSTP officer said.
