Bengal’s Moumita wins a gold & a silver in Dehradun National Games
Kolkata: Bengal's promising athlete Moumita Mondal claimed a gold and a silver in the National Games in Dehradun on Sunday. The 23-year-old, who hails from Jirat in the Hooghly district, leapt a distance of 6.21 metres to win her first National Games gold in the event. She finished ahead of Kerala's Sandra Babu (6.12m) and Deepanshi Singh of Uttar Pradesh (6.11m).Moumita bagged a bronze medal in the previous edition of the Games, held in Goa two years ago. Moumita then went on to another medal to her kitty in Dehradun, this time finishing second in her other pet event — women's 100m hurdles. Andhra Pradesh's Jyothi Yarraji — the reigning Asian champion and silver medallist at the 2023 Hangzhou Games — clocked 13.10s to improve her own National Games record of 13.22 seconds, set in the 2023.Moumita settled for silver with a timing of 13.36 seconds while Nithya Ramraj of Tamil Nadu took the bronze at 13.60 seconds.In the tennis mixed doubles semifinals, Bengal's Nitin Sinha and Yubrani Banerjee lost to Tamil Nadu's Lohith Aksha and L Arunkumar 7-6, 5-7, 5-10. However, the Bengal duo settled for a bronze on account of reaching the last-4 stage. In another notable incident of the Dehradun Games on Sunday, Tejas Shirse of Maharashtra won the men's 100m hurdles. The 22-year-old Shirse clocked 13.65 seconds to better his earlier Games record of 13.71 seconds which he had set in the 2023 edition. His national record stands at 13.41 seconds which he had set last year.Manav Rajanarayanan of Tamil Nadu came second with a time of 14.03 seconds while Muhammed Lazan of Kerala took the bronze at 14.23 seconds.
