KOLKATA: The Bengal government has told Calcutta High Court that it will provide security to BJP leader Mukul Roy. Additional state advocate general Abhratosh Majumdar will apprise the court about the category of security on the next date of hearing of the PIL on July 6.

Salt Lake councillor Debraj Chakrabarty had filed a PIL in the division bench of Chief Justice Jyotirmay Bhattacharya and Justice Arijit Banerjee questioning why Roy was being provided security.

Majumdar submitted that Roy was entitled to ‘Z’ security cover that was scaled down to ‘X’ category on September 25, 2017. The security was withdrawn a month later in October after Roy resigned from the

Rajya Sabha

. Additional solicitor general of eastern region Koushik Sinha submitted that the Centre decided to provide Y+ security to Roy.

“How can I trust a government that has slapped 17 cases against me? I dont need the security provided by the state government,” Roy said.
