KOLKATA: They are the hidden hearts, from which the lyrics of most songs flow.
It is their emotions that distinguish lyrics from poetry and transcends mere words into the deepest of emotions. Now they are not satisfied with being the underlying emotions in a song anymore. They want to voice those emotions too. And for that some of the major poets of Kolkata have decided to form a band -- a poet’s band.
The idea of the band took shape while eminent Bengali writers and poets like Sunil Gangopadhyay, Dibyendu Palit, Sandipan Chattopadhyay, Subodh Sarkar, Krishna Basu, Srijato were rehearsing for the inauguration programme of the anniversary of a Bengali literary magazine.
The three-day festival, inaugurated on Friday, had a singing performance by the poets themselves. It was during the rehearsals of this programme that the idea of the band was mooted.
"There has to be music within every poet, otherwise poetry will not flow from our hearts. Rehearsing for this programme has suddenly opened the floodgates of the music within us and has united poets with different ideologies in a single chorus. To keep this harmony going we decided to form a poet’s band," says poet Subodh Sarkar.
To join the band which will be called ''Krittibas'' only one criteria is needed -- you have to be a poet! Sunil Gangopadhyay says, "It is a very natural transition because as opposed to prose writers, poets normally have songs in their hearts and words."
Dibyendu Palit agrees with him wholeheartedly. "If we can actually go through with it it would be great," he says.
Sanjeev Goenka, vice-chairman, RPG group, said the idea sounds great. "If the product is good we will definitely be in the market to launch it," he said.
