KOLKATA: The detective department has arrested an assistant sub-inspector posted at Beniapukur Police station on charges of collecting Rs 40 lakh by assuring a job under the minister’s quota in the state health department.

His wife, a former gram panchayat pradhan in Howrah, a civic volunteer posted at Lalbazar and another person have also been arrested for assisting him.

“The case was recorded at Hare Street PS on April 24 under different sections of cheating and fraud. The arrested have been identified as Sanjib Deria, Barnali Deria, Kartick Manna and Saikat Dey alias Titto, a civic volunteer," said joint CP (crime) Sankha Subhra Chakrabarty.

The accused had promised to provide a permanent job to the son of complainant Akhtara Banu of Bansdroni in the state health department under the minister’s quota.

“The accused had been going around claiming that he could also arrange for jobs in other government departments and collected money from various people. He was operating from his residence in Uluberia, from where we arrested him on Saturday,” said joint CP Chakrabarty.
