KOLKATA: Former Asansol mayor and Trinamool Congress leader Jitendra Tiwari, who was appointed national spokesperson of the party barely a fortnight ago, joined the BJP on Tuesday at a rally in Baidyabati, Serampore.

Tiwari’s induction, originally set for December last year, had not happened back then because several state BJP leaders, including Union minister Babul Supriyo, had raised objections. On Tuesday, however, he received the party flag from Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh.

“I have not been able to speak about what I felt for a long time. It was a pain. I have for long found my ideologies aligned with that of the BJP. I am thankful to the party for giving me this opportunity,” Tiwari said.

Ghosh said Tiwari had worked hard as an organizer in Trinamool and then as an administrator. “There are many like him who could not speak their mind, but will now be able to work the way they want to in the BJP,” Ghosh added.
