KOLKATA: Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen on Wednesday said the CAA “should be scrapped and the Supreme Court should turn it down on grounds of it being unconstitutional”. Sen, who reached Kolkata on Wednesday night and headed for his Santiniketan home, also reacted to the JNU vandalism, saying, “The big absence of justice in this matter is very conspicuous.”

Speaking to a Bengali news channel outside the airport, Sen said, “To give one citizenship based on religion is against the Constitution. The law is in conflict with the Constitution. It’s the job of the Supreme Court to see whether what was passed in Parliament can be legally attached to the Constitution.”

Speaking about the JNU attack, Sen said, “Some outsiders tortured the students and indulged in lawlessness. Police have failed to nab anybody till date and I heard the CCTV cameras weren’t working. I also heard that an FIR was lodged against those who got beaten up.”

Sayantan Basu, BJP state general secretary, said, “We have nothing to say if Sen reacts to the role of Delhi cops. But we expect him to be equally vocal when lawmakers like

Swapan Dasgupta

and Babul Supriyo are harassed on university campuses.”
