proved it again that less-privileged background is not a hurdle to dreaming big and faring well in Madhyamik examination. Of the 1,057 students studying at the 39 schools run by the mission across the state, 310 scored 90% and above, the topper among them being

Sumaiya Khatun

, who scored 677 out of 700. The rest scored 75% and above.

The daughter of a Madrassa school teacher, Sumaiya scored 100 in maths. She has bagged 14th rank in the state. “In a community, where girls are especially neglected when it comes to education, we are proud a girl has topped the school,” said Nurul Islam, founder secretary of Al-Ameen Mission. Among the examinees this year, 468 were girls.

Most students here are from

poor

families and many of them are first-generation learners. Nurzaman Sheikh, who has been studying at the school’s Sugor branch in Birbhum since Class VI, is the son of a stone quarry worker and has scored 665 marks. “I could not study much. I am happy for my son and hope he will have a bright career with their help,” said his father.
