Kolkata: Actor-producer
Piya Sengupta, who had joined
Trinamool Congress and actively campaigned for the party in the
assembly elections
, won the keenly contested Eastern India Motion Pictures Association (EIMPA)
polls
on Wednesday. She has defeated the
opposition
led by
Ratan Saha and
Krishna Daga
groups, and will be elected
president
as her group received the majority in the
executive committee
.
According to Tollywood insiders, this EIMPA election was a shadow fight between three groups, two of whose contestants had strong affiliations to Trinamool and BJP. Sengupta’s win is significant, especially when it comes a day ahead of the Bhowanipore bypoll.
In 2017, Srikant Mohta’s group had won the EIMPA polls. After Mohta resigned as president, the responsibility was taken over by Sengupta. In 2019, she won uncontested and became the first female president of the association.
This year, Saha’s group had campaigned asking members to vote for change to “regain” the “glorious days” of EIMPA while Sengupta’s group had appealed to members to retain their “own” people. In the end, Sengupta’s group retained its command. The election was held to elect 22 members, including three chairpersons.
“I am happy that my team has got the majority. Our opposition was emphasising on the producers’ section where the result is 7-0 in our favour,” Sengupta said.
Incumbent chairpersons Bijoy Kalyani (producers’ section), Ratan Saha (exhibitors’ section) and Saroj Mukherjee (distributors’ section) retained their posts. Both Kalyani and Mukherjee are part of Sengupta’s group.
“I am very grateful that my members kept faith in me. The opposition had launched a massive save-EIMPA campaign. However, the Eastern India Motion Pictures Association never lost its glory. It has been safe in our hands and that’s why the opposition miserably failed. Since our group led by Piya got the majority in the executive committee, she will be elected president,” Kalyani said.
