Kolkata: 52-year-old constable dies of Covid

A 52-year-old constable of Kolkata police died due to Covid on Thursday, the third policeman to die in as many days and fifth in the second wave. All five were among 5% of the force that are yet to receive both doses as their vaccination had been delayed due to ill health. The latest victim is Ganesh Chandra Dey, posted with the 8th battalion of Kolkata Police.

KOLKATA: A 52-year-old constable of Kolkata police died due to Covid on Thursday, the third policeman to die in as many days and fifth in the second wave. Dey was detected with Covid on May11 and was initially kept in home isolation. He was then shifted to a hospital in Jadavpur. A couple of days ago, he was shifted to ICU at a hospital off EM Bypass where he breathed his last. His death takes the death toll in the force to 29 in this pandemic. Some 593 Kolkata Police personnel have been infected in the second wave. “We have held meetings on how to get the family members, aged between 18-44 vaccinated. We also spoke of raising awareness on how to respond to the virus and avoid it turning serious,”said an officer from the welfare cell.
