KOLKATA : A 40-year-old man climbed atop an iron structure of the busy bridge number 4 at Park Circus, threatening to commit suicide and disrupting normal traffic for over 20 minutes, around 2.40 pm on Monday.
A joint team of Karaya Police and East Guard had to offer the man – who ran a tiles business but was recently facing severe financial crisis – biryani from a top outlet and a promise of a job to convince him to climb down.
Police said the man – a resident of Karaya – had recently gone through divorce proceedings with his wife and younger daughter leaving him. His elder daughter, who stayed with him, was unhappy at the dire financial situation of the family.
“On Monday, he and his elder daughter were on their way to Science City when the man stopped his two-wheeler on the bridge. He told his daughter that his mobile phone had fallen and thus he needed to search for it. Suddenly, the victim started climbing the iron pillars of the bridge. He then perched himself on the top.
If he fell, he would have either hit the electric poles or the railway tracks,” stated an officer. Cops stated that a rescue operation was ordered with DMG and fire department joining the cops. “After we made the offers,he agreed to come down,” he added.
