4 die in Nivedita Setu truck accident, 1 run over in S Kol

Howrah/Kolkata: Five persons were killed and at least seven were injured as the city recorded multiple accidents — from Nivedita Setu in the north to Rashbehari Avenue in the south—between Thursday evening and Friday.Around 3.30 am on Friday, the driver of a mini truck, laden with bundles of garments, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the railings of the Nivedita Setu near the toll plaza. The vehicle, travelling from Habra to Ankurhati in Howrah, overturned. In the impact, six people sitting on top of the pile of clothes on the truck, were thrown onto Panchanantala Road, 45ft below the bridge. All of them were taken to Uttarpara State General Hospital, where four persons—labourers Prabir Ata (25), Kayum Ata (55) and Anil Mondal (40) and a tailor, Prashanta Pal (57)—were declared dead. Two others, injured critically, were shifted to SSKM Hospital. Police suspect a front tyre of the truck burst, leading to the accident.Earlier, around 8pm on Thursday, a 40-year-old Garia resident, Mina Halder, was hit by a govt bus (E1) while she was crossing the road at the intersection of Rashbehari Avenue and Sarat Bose Road. Halder was taken to Ramkrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan, where she was declared dead on arrival. The same night, a Bishnupur resident, Subal Bar (68), was injured when he was hit by a bike on DH Road near Diamond Park in Thakurpukur. He has been hospitalised with multiple injuries. Around 11.15am on Friday, three persons were injured when the two bikes they were on collided with each other on Maa Flyover. Rathindra Das (53), along with pillion rider Moumita Mal (35), was released from SSKM Hospital after being administered first aid. But Abhinandan Mondal (20), who was riding the other bike, had to be admitted to CMRI Hospital, police said. Around an hour before, another biker, Soumik Ghosh (30) from Howrah, skidded on Vidyasagar Setu. He was admitted to SSKM Hospital with injuries to his right leg.
