34 wanted criminals in police net
KOLKATA: Ever since Anuj Sharma, the commissioner of Kolkata Police, instructed his men to follow all that's necessary to ensure free and fair
A high-level meeting, chaired by Sharma and attended by top officers from the level of deputy commissioners, took place on Tuesday to take stock of the approaching elections. "We discussed the prospect of carrying out the arrests in a time-bound and systematic manner," said an officer.
The arrests - which began last Friday and the records were last compiled on Monday - were carried out across the south east and eastern suburban areas of Kolkata. The areas from which maximum arrests were reported are Ekbalpore, Bathtala, Cossipore, Beniapukur, Tangra, Tiljala and Karaya.
Three of the proclaimed offenders among the arrested have been charged under the Arms Act. "The election commission is likely to visit Kolkata in early March. We will compile and submit the data to them. More arrests will follow. This exercise will continue till the elections. While every police station will be involved in this operation, the ARS will be coordinating the entire process," explained a police officer.
Among those who have been arrested is Md Niyazuddin alias Bawarchi Parvez from whom a country-made single-shot firearm was recovered. He had allegedly become active in the Port area. So far, three persons have been arrested from Karaya, three persons from Muchipara, three from Watgunge and two from Tangra.
"We were taken aback when we found that several criminals had gone as far as Nadia and Birbhum on behalf of 'election duty' in 2016. The names of Pinaki Mitra of North 24-Parganas, Mohan and Hasa of Salt Lake, Gour Mondal and Ruis Mondal of Rajarhat and Palash of Belur are doing the rounds for hobnobbing with political parties," said a source.
