KOLKATA: Three persons were crushed to death and two injured when a truck overturned near an island in Salt Lake's EE block on Thursday evening. The trio died after the heavy hydraulic bending machine that was being carried in the truck fell on them. The injured have been admitted to Bidhannagar sub-divisional hospital. The victims, all labourers, were seated alongside the machine in the truck's carrier.
While taking a sharp left turn, the vehicle flipped. The machine fell on the three men, killing them instantly. Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred around 4.30 pm. The truck was heading towards FE block from EE when the incident occurred. "The truck was transporting the machine from Precision Technic Pvt Ltd at Sector V to Dhulagarh Industrial park in Howrah," said North 24-Parganas SP Praveen Kumar. Bystanders and passers-by rushed to the spot and tried to lift up the machine, but it was too heavy. They then spotted a crane passing by and cried for help. But it refused to stop. "We immediately alerted the police who gave chase and forced the crane to return to the spot. But it failed to lift the machine. A heavier crane was then requisitioned," said Barrackpore resident Pradyut Majumdar. His bike was just behind the truck when it overturned. The heavy-duty crane finally arrived 45 minutes later. It was only then that the machine could be lifted and the bodies removed. "We could hear them screaming for help for a few minutes and then everything fell silent. It was frustrating that we could not move the machine to save the three," said Raja Sarkar, another eyewitness. Police have identified the victims as Ram Baksh Yadav (68), Sitaram Nishad (38) and Sarabjit Ram (58).
