The state government has decided to keep two fire engines stationed at Writers' Buildings so that there wouldn't be any need to call the fire brigade when a fire breaks out at the secretariat.

KOLKATA: The state government has decided to keep two fire engines stationed at Writers' Buildings so that there wouldn't be any need to call the fire brigade when a fire breaks out at the secretariat. Eighteen fire services engineers would be appointed for ensuring proper fire safety at the Writers'.
The erstwhile Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government had convened several meetings on fire safety at the secretariat but had not managed to implement most of the expert committee recommendations.

Fire services minister Javed Khan said his government would not just limit itself with the two fire engines but also appoint engineers armed with hi-tech equipment to douse a fire.
The government is taking fire safety very seriously and has decided to conduct regular safety check-ups. Soon after taking charge, Mamata Banerjee had ordered removal of stalls from the corridors to ensure fire safety.
In December last year, chief secretary Samar Ghosh had held extensive meetings on fire safety in Writers'. Pratim Chatterjee, then fire services minister, had called for opening a control room of his department in the state secretariat where fire norms had also been flouted.
