At that time, some armed goons came and started hurling bombs and firing indiscriminately. While CPM worker Biswanath Chakraborty (38) died on the spot and partyman Goutam Das (39) died at Behrampore New General Hospital, the conditions of Goutam Saha, another CPM supporter, and Apuarba Sharma, a carpenter, are critical.
Sources said Saha, once a Congress worker of Behrampore, was accused of abducting Jhantu Saha, a DYFI leader of Behrampore, in 2001. Though all the other accused in that case surrendered in a Behrampore court, Saha was absconding. In 2006, all the accused got acquitted. As Saha did not surrender, he was declared absconder by police.
A few years back, Saha quit Congress and joined CPM apparently to escape police harassment in the Jhantu abduction case.
