The Kolkata Police is introducing 16 electric cars (out of a total of 226 electric vehicles that will be taken on lease) for patrolling and traffic duty to counter rising diesel prices and escalating maintenance costs.

Kolkata: The Kolkata Police is introducing 16 electric cars (out of a total of 226 electric vehicles that will be taken on lease) for patrolling and traffic duty to counter rising diesel prices and escalating maintenance costs. This will be the first ever induction of green vehicle in the Kolkata Police fleet. The vehicles are likely to be flagged off next Sunday on World Environment Day by the commissioner of police, Vineet Goyal.

For now, said sources, these vehicles will be deputed on the roads as per a specific roster.
“This will be a nice way of raising green awareness aimed at the masses,” said a cop from KP’s transport wing.
