123-yr-old Nahoum’s downs shutters in face of LPG crisis

Kolkata: The West Asia war seems to have had its effect on Kolkata's only Jewish bakery, the 123-year-old Nahoum and Sons in New Market, which downed shutters on Wednesday, unable to sustain operations due to the ongoing LPG crisis.

The confectionery is due to reopen on Monday, according to a notice pasted on the shutter. However, insiders admitted they had no clue when they would be able to function normally.


The notice read: "The shop will remain closed from 18th March to 22nd March 2026, due to unavoidable circumstances."

Jagadish Haldar, the manager, told TOI, "We had somehow been managing all these days, ever since the LPG shortage started. The quantity of items decreased. We carried on until it was decided to shut down operations temporarily. It was impossible to continue half-heartedly. There will be a sustained effort to reopen as soon as possible."

Neighbouring shop owners were surprised by the closure. "The shop's weekly closure is on Saturdays. This is the first time I have seen it being shut for such a long duration," said Sushil Jasnani, owner of the garments shop next door.

The shop was closed for a day when David Nahoum, the last owner, died in 2013.
