10% more weightage for CBSE analytical answers
KOLKATA: From next year’s boards, Central Board of Secondary Education will allot higher weightage to sections that have questions to test analytical skills of students. From 2024, competency-based questions for class X will contain 50% marks while that for class XII will have 40% marks.
An orientation programme was organised by Kolkata Sahodaya Complex on Saturday on the topic ‘the changing face of education in the light of NEP-2020’ where CBSE director-academics Joseph Emmanuel addressed the principals of CBSE schools in Bengal. CBSE joint secretary-academics Pragya M Singh and regional officer Bhubaneswar K Srinivasan were present in the programme.
CBSE started changing the assessment pattern from 2019-20 by introducing case-based questions, internal choice, reducing subject type questions in class X board exams and increasing 10% every year, which next year will be 50% for class X and 40% for class XII for every subject. Board has already uploaded the changing pattern of assessment and instructed principals to teach students accordingly so that they do not suffer during exams. CBSE director-academics Joseph Emmanuel said, “We are trying to shift from rote learning to a learning more focused on developing the creative and critical thinking capacities. So it’s a journey, whatever students have learnt in classroom teaching needs to be assessed otherwise it will be meaningless.”
National Education Policy, 2020 recommended for capacity building of functionaries in assessment to align with the reforms and multiple modes of assessment by combining different types which are more focused on authentic assessment. NEP, 2020 has also recommended strengthening of formative assessments in internal examinations.
In the orientation programme, principals have been told to give emphasis on the activity-based learning to upscale students’ skills to think critically, which will be reflected on the marks.
Most of the principals said if students wanted to score well then they should have clear concepts about subjects and subject matters, too. Indus Valley World School director Amita Prasad said, “They want to move away from rote learning. But now, students should have analytical abilities and conceptual understanding has to be very strong to answer the questions, which are not directly based on texts and it is not something that needs to be memorised and written.”
