KOLKATA: The Enforcement Branch of Kolkata Police claimed to have busted an alleged fake milk powder factory on Wednesday night at Burrabazar, triggering speculation that such units, which labelled its products as ISI- and FSSO-certified and packed it under the name of two major brands, might be operating in several other places in the city.
According to the police, the unit — located on Netaji Subhas Road — was manufacturing adulterated powder milk products, using arrowroot and
sugar
dust. Souvik Kundu (25), its owner, has been arrested.
According to joint CP (crime) Praveen Tripathi, the cops have carried out seizures worth Rs 11 lakh. “We have recovered 473 kg of this adulterated milk powder, 50 kg arrowroot powder and 40 kg sugar.
Police sources said the seizures also included several hundred containers and labels of top milk powder manufacturers and some suspicious chemicals. The

, though, did not confirm about recovery of any chemicals.
“We are investigating how long he had been involved with the gang and the whereabouts of his associates. We had received this tipoff some time ago and were developing the leads. We might seek help from forensic experts. While we have been busting spurious units producing fake milk products like
ghee
and vanaspati, it is not often that we have come across milk powder,” claimed an officer.
Initial investigation has suggested that the gang was in operation for a substantial time and has been sending out finished products outside the state.
A couple of years ago, Besu checked contents of milk powder in the city and found that the samples had cane sugar,
cellulose
and
sodium chloride
