1 from West Bengal dies in J&K tunnel cave-in

A machinist from Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri died and four went missing when an under-construction tunnel in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) caved in around 11.30pm on Thursday. The incident happened when the deceased, Sudhir Roy (31), was working in the tunnel. Four other machinists from Dhupguri - Parimal Roy (35), Dipak Roy (30), Jadav Roy(23) and Goutam Roy (22) - were untraceable.

JALPAIGURI: A machinist from Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri died and four went missing when an under-construction tunnel in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) caved in around 11.30pm on Thursday. The incident happened when the deceased, Sudhir Roy (31), was working in the tunnel. The J&K administration has informed the Bengal government that attempts are on to trace the missing persons and NDRF has been deployed to spot them.
A pall of gloom descended on Dhupguri's Mullickpara and Magurmari areas as the news reached on Friday morning. A group of 15 machinists from Dhupguri had gone to J&K earlier this month and joined the tunnel construction work on May 7.
However, the J&K administration has informed that Shyamal Roy, another Dhupguri resident, who was buried below the debris, was rescued and admitted to a local hospital.
Jalpiaguri SP Debarshi Dutta visited the homes of the missing machinists.
