JALPAIGURI: A machinist from

Dhupguri

in Jalpaiguri died and four went missing when an under-construction tunnel in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) caved in around 11.30pm on Thursday. The incident happened when the deceased,

Sudhir Roy

(31), was working in the tunnel. Four other machinists from Dhupguri - Parimal Roy (35), Dipak Roy (30),

Jadav

Roy(23) and Goutam Roy (22) - were untraceable.

The J&K administration has informed the

Bengal

government that attempts are on to trace the missing persons and NDRF has been deployed to spot them.

A pall of gloom descended on Dhupguri's Mullickpara and Magurmari areas as the news reached on Friday morning. A group of 15 machinists from Dhupguri had gone to J&K earlier this month and joined the tunnel construction work on May 7.

However, the J&K administration has informed that

Shyamal Roy

, another Dhupguri resident, who was buried below the debris, was rescued and admitted to a local hospital.

Jalpiaguri SP Debarshi Dutta visited the homes of the missing machinists.
