Headed by judge S R Patil, the court sentenced the duo to three years

rigorous imprisonment

under section 498-A of the Indian Penal Code. The court also slapped Rs 5000 fine on each along with simple imprisonment of six months if they fail to pay the fine.

The duo has been identified as Sandip Vishnu Doiphode (30) and his brother Santosh (35).

On April 7, 2016, Sandip’s wife Reshma allegedly committed

suicide

by jumping into a river. Following her death, the accused duo reported the incident with Vadgaon police. However, during the proceedings of the court, prosecution failed to prove the duo’s involvement in Reshma’s death.

Public prosecutor Amita Kulkarni said, “Reshma and Sandip had married on January 1, 2011. Ever since, Sandip has been harassing Reshma to get money from her parents. On April 7, 2016, Sandip and his brother lodged a complaint with Vadgaon police informing them about Reshma’s alleged suicide. During investigation of the case, a minor witness told police that he saw the duo keeping Reshma’s dead body in their car and driving away.”
