KOLHAPUR: The Maratha community from Vidharbha will hold a silent rally towards the state legislative assembly in Nagpur on December 14. A petition of demands is likely to be given directly to the chief minister.
Prominent leaders of the community met at Aurangabad on Sunday to discuss the future course of its agitations. So far, over 20 rallies have taken place at different district headquarters and the final rally was being planned in Mumbai.
However, in the meeting it was decided that the Mumbai rally will be organised only if the government fails to address their demands.
Pradip Salunkhe, one of the representatives who attended the meet said, "We expect the state to take proactive steps as early as possible. The plan to hold a rally in Mumbai has been postponed. The demands are same which were made two months ago and therefore the government is aware of the demands and action is expected from government's side."
The demands include a central institute in the name of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj to improve competitive excellence in youths and funds of Rs 5,000 crore for Annasaheb Patil Arthik Vikas Mahamandal for providing scholarships to the economically backward category students.
Meanwhile, preparations for the rally in Kolhapur on October 15 has entered the last phase. On Sunday, various communities extended their support to the Maratha rally.
Gani Ajrekar of the Muslim Boarding said, "Members from our community have decided to provide one truckload of bananas to the people participating in the rally, and also over 20,000 food packets and dry fruits for those coming from distant places. Muslim youth will help manage the 40 parking in their localities."
