Sangli’s Kavalapur airport receives in-principle nod

Kolhapur: The proposed 160-acre Kavalapur airport in Sangli district has received in-principle approval from the state at a meeting held in Mantralaya chaired by industries minister Uday Samant on Wednesday.
Farmers and industries from the Sangli district were demanding an airport for the last few years to transport grapes, turmeric, pomegranates and raisins.
The land, currently under the Industrial Development Corporation, will be transferred to the Airport Development Authority. The proposal to develop an industrial estate in Kavalapur will be cancelled.
Prithviraj Pawar, a member of Airport Bachao Kruti Samiti, said, "People of Sangli will remember this historic day and support the development."
Shiv Sena MLA Anil Babar said, “Fruit and vegetable farming is huge in the district and export of agricultural goods will bring the world market closer because of the airport. There is a need for a cargo airport for exporting grapes, turmeric, raisins, pomegranates, etc."
Along with Babar, MP Sanjay Patil, chief executive officer of MIDC Dr Bipin Sharma, upper additional chief executive officer Shivaji Patil, additional secretary Kiran Jadhav, Vasundhara Jadhav (Sangli), chief engineer Subhash Tupe (Mumbai), and officer of Maharashtra Aviation Authority RA Naik were present for the meeting.
MLA Sudhir Gadgil and district collector Dr Raja Dayanidhi attended virtually.
