KOLHAPUR

: Veteran actor Rohini Hattangadi will be honoured with the prestigious

Vishnudas Bhave Award

for her outstanding contribution to Marathi theatre, said Akhil Maharashtra Natya Vidya Mandir Samiti president Sharad Karale here on Saturday.

The actor will be presented the award at a function in

Sangli

on the eve of ‘Marathi Rangbhumi Din’ on November 5 by Premanand Gajvi, renowned playwright and chairman of All India Marathi Natyasammelan.

The award, given away annually, has been instituted in the memory of pioneer Marathi dramatist Vishnudas Bhave by Sangli-based Akhil Maharashtra Natya Vidya Mandir.

Karale told reporters that the award is conferred on personalities for their contribution to the Marathi theatre. “This year, we have unanimously chosen Rohini Hattangadi. She started her career as an actor since her school life and reached fame after her role of Kasturba in Richard Attenborough’s film, ‘Gandhi’.”

Karale said that Hattangadi has acted in several plays, films and television series.

The past recipient of the award include Balgandharva, Keshavrao Date, Acharya Pralhad Keshav Atre, Bhalkandra Pedharkar, P L Deshpande and Ga Di Madgulkar. This is the 54th year of the award. It includes a trophy, citation and Rs 25,000 in cash.
