Over 7 lakh Jan Dhan accounts opened

: Over 7 lakh Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts have been opened in the district by the end of September.

, under the scheme, a beneficiary can open the bank account on zero balance. The officials said that over 60% accounts opened are from the rural areas in the district.

Kininge said that by the end of September as many as 7.64 lakh accounts have been opened under the scheme. "The response to PMJDY is great in rural areas where as many as 5.19 lakh people opened their accounts, while from the urban areas around 2.44 lakh people opened the accounts. Out of these beneficiaries, 3.62 lakh people have availed their RuPay card."

He added that preference has been given for the financial literacy and to achieve it various workshops are being conducted across the region. "Apart from Jan Dhan Yojana, people are getting information about various banking activities which are good for their financial literacy. The number is growing slowly and steadily across the district," he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the financial inclusion scheme during his first Independence Day speech in the year 2014. It was launched in August 2014 with a target to open bank accounts for 7.5 crore poor persons by January 26, 2015. The target was later increased to 10 crore accounts.

The PMJDY is a national mission for financial inclusion to ensure access to financial services, namely, banking and savings and deposit accounts, remittance, credit, insurance, pension in an affordable manner. It focuses on coverage of households as against the earlier plan which focused on coverage of villages.
