Kolhapur: The Kolhapur police on Friday arrested a 46-year-old man in connection with the death of his 72-year-old aunt who was found dead in her Gangavesh apartment four days ago.
The deceased, identified as Usha Maruti Bhiungade, had been living alone since her husband passed away last Dec. Her nephew, Parshuramm, had earlier informed the police that she was suffering from multiple ailments and that he had visited her the previous night to deliver medicines. Given her health condition, the police initially saw no signs of foul play.
During investigation, however, the police learned that the nephew, who resides at Chintamani Park on Phulewadi Ring Road, had also visited on the morning she was found dead. Further probe revealed that he allegedly mixed a chemical — commonly used for polishing jewellery — into her tea. After consuming the tea, the woman suffered a heart attack.
The police also discovered that her gold chain, earrings and bangles were missing. According to Sushant Chavan, inspector of the local crime branch, Parshuram murdered his aunt to obtain quick money for personal enjoyment.
