Maharashtra doctor suicide case: Cop arrested for rape, abetment sacked; victim’s brother says ‘first step to justice’
KOLHAPUR: Special Inspector General of Police (Kolhapur Range) Sunil Phulari on Tuesday passed an order dismissing the sub-inspector (PSI) arrested in the alleged rape and suicide abetment of a doctor with the Phaltan subdistrict hospital, from service with immediate effect.
The sub-inspector, who was earlier suspended after his arrest, is currently lodged in Satara jail under judicial custody. "The PSI has shown moral turpitude and delinquent behaviour, considering the case registered against him. An investigation is going on and the case will be decided by the criminal court," Phulari told TOI.

A police inspector-led enquiry was carried out against the PSI pertaining to his behaviour and past cases, if any. Phulari dismissed the PSI based on the report submitted by the inspector.
The doctor was found dead in a first-floor room of a hotel in Phaltan on Oct 23. The postmortem report mentioned death due to asphyxia caused by hanging. The police recovered her body and found a note, purportedly written by her, on her palm.
Phulari said the dismissal was in connection with the current case only. The PSI fled immediately after his name was found mentioned in the suicide note purportedly written by the deceased doctor. Two days later, the PSI showed up in the Phaltan rural police station, after which he was arrested.
"He failed to provide his cellphone which, according to police, had crucial evidence. It was found four days later," Phulari said.
In a reply to the enquiry committee in Aug, the doctor had mentioned the PSI and others who pressured her to declare some pre-arrest accused fit and bringing the accused in the midnight hours to harass her. Meanwhile, the doctor’s brother has urged CM Fadnavis to order the dismissal of other police officers, who allegedly pressured and mentally tortured her. “Dismissal of the accused SI is just a first step towards justice to my sister,” he told TOI .
The state home department has appointed senior IPS officer Tejaswi Satpute to head the special investigation team looking into the case. Her appointment followed directions from chief minister and home minister Devendra Fadnavis. Satpute is currently serving as Commander of the State Reserve Police Force. She also served as Satara SP between 2019 and 2022.
