KOLHAPUR: The Kolhapur Municipal Transport (KMT) has been selected for the first prize in the category of vehicle productivity at national level for the year 2011-12. The Association of State Road Transport Undertakings (ASRTU),), a national body which coordinates among different state transport undertakings has selected KMT for the award. KMT is a public sector undertaking which comes under the jurisdiction of the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC).
The award will be conferred to KMT on January 27, during the 58th annual conference of the ASTRU to be held at Jodhpur in Rajasthan.
The Union ministry of road transport and highways had analyzed performance of 38 state road transport corporations and municipal /state road transport undertakings across the country during 2011-12 and prepared a 35-page report. The award for KMT assumes significance as around 56% buses out of the 136 vehicles owned by the KMT ply on old roads and many are not fit to be run on the roads."
Sanjay Bhosale, additional manager of the KMT while talking to TOI said, "Though we have very few buses as compared to the demand, we are utilizing the available resources with maximum strength. The award has been conferred to us because inspite of the paucity of resources we have utilized it properly. In order to avoid inconvenience to the commuters, we allow each KMT bus to run 235.18 km per day."
At present, there are around 136 buses with the KMT and 36 of those are operated by a private service provider on rental basis. The rest are owned by KMT. Around 90,000 commuters travel by the KMT buses every day on 33 different routes. Besides, the KMT provides services to the 80 fringe villages situated within a 15-20 km periphery of the city.
"We are seeking the approval of the Central government for 104 buses under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. The final approval is likely to come in the next week. The award has added to our credential which will only bolster our demand of new buses," added Bhosale.
ASRTU works to bring together all state road transport undertakings on a common platform with the aim of pooling their resources. The national body is working in coordination with other departments in order to deal with the diverse problems faced by different transport units. The association has now 58 members.
