Kolhapur: A team of doctors from the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) and local police raided a renowned hospital in Rajarampuri area of the city on Monday where
illegal sex determination and termination of pregnancy was allegedly being carried out.
For the last four days, the team, along with some social activists, had been keeping a watch on the hospital and they finally found a pregnant woman who agreed to be part of a sting operation.
Geeta Hasurkar, a social activist, said: “The woman was asked to pay Rs 15,000 for
sex determination. The doctors at the hospital told the police that the sonography machine was lying defunct, but it was not the case. The machine was being used for sex determination. The woman was also given a pill to terminate the pregnancy. We also found that no record of patients were being maintained at the hospital and that made us suspicious about their activities.”
The police have lodged a complaint and the doctors from the hospital are likely to be arrested soon. The team that raided the hospital was led by chief health officer of the KMC
Ramesh Jadhav.
