Thalassaemia is an inherited disease. Since birth, the blood formation in such patients does not take place and they have to get their blood transfused regularly for survival. Currently, the district has around 175 registered Thalassaemia patients.
Varun Bafna, a city-based haematologist who will head the centre, said, “The centre will help Thalassaemia and Haemophilic patients not just from Kolhapur, but also from the neighbouring districts. It will be beneficial for poor patients as the annual expense to treat Haemophilic patients is about Rs 5 lakh. Satej Patil and collector Rahul Rekhawar have provided Rs 70 lakh for procuring the factors which will help coagulate blood.”
