KOLHAPUR: The Local Crime Branch (LCB), Kolhapur on Friday nabbed a gang of six, for allegedly looting Rs 30 lakh from two employees of a Sangli-based company at Railway station road on July 23. Police have recovered Rs 23 lakh from the gang.
The arrested have been identified as Lakhan Chandrakant Devkule (22), Shivaji Park, Kolhapur, Devendra alias Dhebya Ramesh Waghmare (24), a resident near Temblai Railway gate, Vishal Jaysing Machchale (20), from Ambedkar Nagar in Kasaba Bawada, Shubham Krishnath Patil (22) from Kerle in the Karveer tehsil, Ketan Suresh Khot (30), from Rajarampuri, lane number 4 and Sujata Kamlesh Patel (40), a resident of Ganpatipeth, in Sangli.
According to police, the money belonged to a company which has offices at Sangli and Kolhapur. On July 23, two employees identified as Arun Sutar and Nikesh Patel had to transport Rs 30 lakh from Sangli to Kolhapur. When they were passing Railway station road on their motorcycle, they found a two-wheeler parked in the middle of the road. As they halted, the culprits approached them, beat them up and fled with the cash.
Superintendent of police Pradeep Deshpande, said, "Devkule is the prime accused in the case. Along with him, Machchale, Dhebya and Khot are criminals on police record. All four were arrested after a search operation in Dharawi in Mumbai."
The SP said that the woman suspect owns a house near the Sangli-based company. "She was aware of the transactions and passed on the information to her friend, Khot. Following this, the culprits hatched a plan and looted the cash," he said. tnn
