Department of Biotechnology shares Shivaji University, Kolhapur project on its website, social media

KOLHAPUR: The central governments Department of Biotechnology (DBT) at

(SUK), has taken cognizance of one of its projects in biochemistry and shared it on its official website and social media twitter handle.

A SUK official said, "The DBT supported

project

on phytoremediation treatment process for degradation of dyes from textile industrial effluent, was done at the

Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation

(MIDC) unit at Kagal."

The principal coordinator researcher at SUK Sanjay Govindwar said, "The project was started in 2014 and has been funded by the DBT. We have received Rs 27 lakh as funds for the project. We had sent a proposal in 2014, and after the formalities were processed the project's deadline was set till 2017.

Sanjay said, "There are a few plants which have the potential to remove dyes from the industrial effluents following a process of degradation and chemical reactions. We got our hands on a few of the plants and we were surprised when the results were out. There were a few plants which could degrade the dyes and are found in the industrial effluent as much as 94%.The studies have proven that Macrophytes Ipomea aquatic, Alternanthera philoxeroides (a massively rooted macrophyte), and Salvinia molesta plants have a potential for textile dyes and effluent treatment. Ipomoea aquatic and the macrophyte can degrade a highly sulfonated and diazo textile dye brown up to 94% within a span of 72 hours."

The vice-chancellor, SUK, Devanand Shinde, said, "The university research works on the remediation of greener technologies is commendable. The biochemistry department's research work on the social issues has once again proved to be useful."
