KOLHAPUR: The

police are on high alert ahead of the Supreme Court verdict on the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case this month.

An order has been issued to all police stations in the district to cancel leaves and weekly offs of all personnel. Similar orders have been issued in the neighbouring districts of Sangli, Satara and Solapur as well.

The district administration has called a meeting of all the members of the peace committee on Wednesday morning at the Shahu Smarak Bhavan, Dasara chowk, in Kolhapur against the backdrop of upcoming verdict.

“We have asked all the peace committee members in the city to attend the meeting. The meeting will also be attended by district collector Daulat Desai, Zilla Parishad chief executive officer Aman Mittal, Kolhapur Municipal Corporation commissioner Mallinath Kalshetti, superintendent of police Abhinav Deshmukh and other officials. We expect everyone attending the meeting to ensure that peace prevails after the verdict,” said a senior police officer.

The police are assessing the situation in the district and will deploy

to ensure the maintenance of law and order after the SC verdict. Officers have intensified cordon and search operations, surveillance at religious locations and important places in the district.

“We have received instructions to take immediate action to ensure that peace prevails in the district. We have identified sensitive places and are focusing on the towns like Ichalkaranji,” he said.
