City’s students observe Constitution Day with zeal
Kolhapur: Around 5,000 students from schools and colleges in the city participated in a rally on the eve of Constitution Day.
The rally started at Dasara chowk in the city and ended at Bindu chowk via Venus corner and Laxmipuri. At Bindu chowk, the students, along with government officials and politicians, took the pledge to follow the constitution.
The students from across the city gathered at Dasara chowk at around 8am on Saturday with banners. They chanted slogans to follow teh Constitution. The rally covered the city’s main streets before culminating at Bindu chowk. Various other events such as essay writing contests and debate competitions were also organised for the students with the subject ‘our constitution’.
Member of Parliament Dhananjay Mahadik said, “Observing the day will help in spreading knowledge on the importance of the constitution of our country. It will also help promote awareness among the youngsters and students. Apart from the rally, the quiz programmes and exams based on the Indian constitution should be organised across the district, so that students and the public in general should not only read about it, but also study it in detail.”
Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, the descendant of the erstwhile princely state of Kolhapur said, “Our constitution is one of the best constitutions that have been framed in the world, and we should strive to follow it. In many countries, the constitution has been misused, affecting the fate of these countries. Because of this, we have to keep in mind and follow the constitution and ensure that it is followed by everyone.”
On November 26, 1949 the constituent assembly adopted the constitution. The central government had in 2015 decided to observe November 26 as Constitution Day to honour the Indian Constitution. This is the second year that the day has been observed.
