A press statement issued by RPI on Wednesday confirmed Nikalje’s candidature. The party has also announced its intention to contest Malshiras (reserved) constituency in Solapur district.

Nikalje has been associated with the Ambedkar movement and is an active member of RPI. He had also contested an election in 2014 from Chembur in Mumbai.

The Phaltan seat is currently represented by NCP’s Deepak Chavan, a staunch follower of Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar. RPI has also declared that it would decide on the candidate for Malshiras constituency after consultation with Vijaysinh Mohite-Patil who has a huge political clout in Solapur district.

The party — part of the NDA alliance — also said that the BJP should give the Pune Cantonment seat to RPI if it has issues in giving the Malshiras constituency. “BJP- Sena has agreed to leave six seats in the state and two posts of ministers in the cabinet for RPI,” the statement said.
