Nagaland hit by shortage of power

Dimapur: The Nagaland power department on Tuesday said the power shortage in the state has reached an alarming stage as the hydro generating stations in the NE region are not being able to generate power to their full potential.

It added that several thermal power stations in the region have shut down for maintenance, compounding the problem. It said the state is 90% dependent on import of power at present. The department said power shortage is a perennial problem in the northeast during the lean season every year as the region is largely dependent on hydropower. It added that the shortage is far more acute acute this year. "The shutdown of a major thermal power station for maintenance has worsened the power availability situation," it said.

The department said though availability and supply of power has been increasing every year, the rate of increase in demand has been much more. It added the peak demand of the state during the 1990s was only about 60MW but it has increased by 300% to 180MW now.
