Kannur: Youth Congress (YC) workers marched to Anjarakandy dental college seeking the immediate arrest of the accused in the death of BDS student Nithin Raj. The march turned violent on Wednesday after agitators crossed a police barricade near the campus. When police tried to block them it led to a clash.Some protesters damaged the windows and doors of the college. Police took them into custody and moved them from the spot. Police had deployed a large contingent on the campus after back-to-back protests arose against the college. YC state secretary Robert Vellamvally inaugurated the march and district president Vijil Mohanan presided over the event.Fraternity Movement organized a march to Kannur commissioner's office to protest against the delay in arresting the accused. Police used water cannons to disperse them.Loan app staff in police custodyMeanwhile, employees of the loan app, who were held in connection with the death of Raj, were remanded in police custody for two days for further questioning. The accused, all natives of Uttar Pradesh, were booked under Section 308 (extortion) and Section 13 of Kerala Money-Lenders Act and sections 9(1)(a) and 9(2) of Kerala Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Interest Act.
Police took them into custody from Noida in UP on April 16. Chakkarakkal Police recorded the arrest on April 17.The Kannur city police commissioner told reporters that over 1,200 persons from Kerala had fallen prey to the loan app and said investigation is underway to check if the number is higher.
