Upgraded KSRTC terminal set for inauguration
Kochi: The inauguration of the renovated KSRTC bus terminal and the launch of construction for a new terminal at Karikkamuri are expected to take place within a few days. The new facility, to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 13 crore, is moving toward the tender stage, and both KSRTC and the Public Works Department (PWD) are expediting the procedures.According to a PWD official, the final estimate for the new terminal will be completed within the next few days. "Once the estimate is finalized, it will be submitted for the chief engineer's approval. Tenders can be invited only after the approval is obtained," said the official associated with the project.
Meanwhile, renovation works at the existing terminal have been completed. MLA T J Vinod said the building's foundation has been raised by two feet to prevent waterlogging. "Kadappa stones have been laid over the elevated base to ensure that rainwater does not enter the premises even during heavy rain," he said. Vinod further said the upgraded facility also includes a separate toilet complex outside the main building. Restrooms for crew members and a waiting area for passengers have also been provided. "The renovation was completed at a cost of about Rs 1.82 crore. Of this, Rs 1 crore was contributed by BPCL Kochi Refinery under its CSR initiative, Rs 70 lakh was allocated from the MLA's development fund and Rs 12 lakh was provided by a private financial institution," he added. Vinod said the renovated terminal would be inaugurated within days, along with the formal launch of the new project. Due to financial constraints, KSRTC has scaled down the new terminal plan. The earlier proposal for 33 bus bays has been revised to 22. The project includes a steel-roofed structure for bus bays and a separate building to house administrative offices and operational facilities.
