KOCHI: Two teachers from
Kochi
, K K Raman and C K Biju, will be among those who receive the national teachers' awards from President Pranab Mukherjee at a function to be held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on Monday.
The award comes to Raman, Raman Maash to his students and colleagues, in his last year in service. After working as a teacher for 32 years he will retire this year. He is an art teacher and has also specialized in behavioural therapy and yoga and currently teaches art for secondary classes at Government VHSS School in Thirumarady.
'Aksharachithrakala,' an art that he practices, teaches children to make drawings based on alphabets. While he is popular among primary school kids through soft skill classes, Raman works as a counsellor to secondary school students.
"My method is a combination of art with studies. There are a lot of values and skills that the students can't learn in mainstream education. To preach this directly can be a futile, however, to mix art into counselling is something that grabs the students' attention," said Raman.
Biju, who has been a teacher for the last 19 years, is known for his teaching methods involving practical application of physics. He was selected as the best teacher in the South-Indian science fair in 2004 and had presented award winning papers in 2007, 2011, and 2015. Biju now teaches at SNV Sanskrit Higher Secondary School at North Paravoor.
"Teaching physics theories are easier when they are explained through experiments. There are a lot of things that can be achieved using simple equipment's like coir or balloons," said Biju. "Coir and balloon experiments are two of my methods which are favourites among students. I am happy that the country recognized my skills as a teacher," said Biju.
Biju has also been participating in creative workshops for the preparation of textbooks by SCERT. He is an author of the book, Balloon Vidyakal, which is about experiments using balloons to teach simple theories of physics. Biju also runs a radio show 'Shasthradeepthi', a science magazine programme in Kochi FM of All India Radio.
