Kochi: A 53-year-old's tumour was successfully removed from his neck by a keyhole surgery on Wednesday.
The tumour, about 7cm in size, was found adjacent to the main blood vessels, thyroid and the salivary glands in the neck region.
"You normally don't see a tumour in the neck region as there are no fatty tissues, only muscles," said Dr R Padmakumar, laparoscopic surgeon, Sunrise Hospital.
The patient was not confident when he was told that the neck would have to be cut open. Hence, there was a risk involved because the main blood vessels to the brain was in that region. "We could do it laparoscopically as we perform a lot of thyroid surgeries without even leaving a scar. The region needs to be looked at microscopically as there are lot of vessels and nerves," he added.
"The tumour had to be removed and hence keyhole surgery was the better option," he said.
